Our Personal, Social and Health Education Curriculum
At High Hurstwood CE Primary School, we are committed to creating a happy, nurturing and supportive environment where every child is encouraged to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. We believe that PSHE is at the heart of preparing children for life, helping them to become confident, resilient and responsible members of society.
To support this, we deliver the Let's Talk PSHE curriculum, developed by Opening Young Minds. Let's Talk is a comprehensive programme for children from EYFS to Year 6 that focuses on the development of resilience, empathy, integrity, emotional literacy and positive relationships. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that key concepts are revisited and built upon year after year, helping children develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
The curriculum is organised around key themes including:

- Wellbeing
- Health Education
- Friendships
- Living in the Wider World
- Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Through these areas of learning, children are equipped with the knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed to navigate life's opportunities and challenges with confidence. They learn how to manage emotions, build positive relationships, develop self-awareness, challenge stereotypes, stay safe and become active members of their communities.
A unique feature of our PSHE provision is the use of Let's Talk Journals. Children regularly reflect on their learning through written and creative journalling activities. These journals provide opportunities for pupils to think deeply about the concepts discussed, make connections to their own experiences and consider how they can apply their learning in everyday life. Over time, the journals create a valuable record of each child's personal development journey, helping them recognise their growth in confidence, emotional literacy and understanding of themselves and others. The journals also support the development of communication, reflection and oracy skills, which are central to the Let's Talk approach.
PSHE extends far beyond dedicated lessons. Through collective worship, classroom discussions, pupil leadership opportunities, educational visits and everyday interactions, children are encouraged to put their learning into practice. The shared language and concepts taught through Let's Talk help create a calm, supportive school culture where children feel safe to express themselves, discuss challenges and celebrate successes.
The personal development of our pupils underpins everything we do. Through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum, we aim to ensure that every child leaves High Hurstwood as a confident, compassionate and resilient individual, well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.
